BINGHAMTON, N.Y.-BCT FCU is reimbursing members who lost a total of $10,000 after providing their account information to a phishing scam using cell phone text messages.
Scammers sent text messages to an undetermined number of Verizon Wireless customers, telling them their BCT card had been deactivated and they needed to call a certain number to reactivate the card.
About 10 BCT members provided their 16-digit card numbers and PIN. The scammers used the information to recreate cards, withdraw money at ATMs and buy items at brick-and-mortar stores.
