CEO Jeff Disteroft describes University of Iowa Community Credit Union's internal leadership team – comprised by a cross-reference of employees and facilitated by Disteroft – as "robust." And building off of its name, the CU takes community seriously both near and far.
"The most recent leadership team orchestrated a 10-day mission trip to Haiti and encouraged other employees to join them in the process," said Disteroft. "The current class is working toward a comprehensive project with the area Habitat for Humanity and at the same time hoping to 'adopt' one the area elementary schools struggling with a lack of mentors for impoverished children."
Employees are also encouraged to continue their education and are regularly provided with opportunities to attend external conferences, webinars and on-site "lunch and learn" training sessions.
Senior Vice President of Human Resources Sue Freeman explained that once a quarter, members of the HR and training departments conduct a career planning and development workshop for interested employees. During this two-hour session, employees are met with and introduced to internal resources, such as the Career Blueprint program.
"The Career Blueprint serves as a useful tool for employees to determine the optimal career path that fits their talents, interests and desires," said Freeman. "Blueprints serve as a snapshot into the key sets of knowledge, skills and abilities."
Another employee-focused event is the annual Rally Day. Set up like a traditional conference with a keynote speaker, employees select various breakout sessions to attend and group activities that promote teamwork. This year's theme was centered around innovation, with breakout sessions focused on creativity and innovative thinking.
"Our hope is that employees leave thinking differently about the impact they can have on the workplace and their lives outside of work," said Freeman.
Founded in 1938, the CU currently operates 15 branches and serves more than 140,000 members.
