WASHINGTON-Credit unions giving out year-end bonus dividends this year have been using the age-old CU tradition as a way to demonstrate their financial strength even in the midst of a financial crisis.
Among the credit unions offering some sort of annual bonus so far include:
* Scott CU, in Collinsville, Ill., is paying members a bonus of $400,000 this year, the 17th straight year of a year-end payout.
* Keesler FCU in Biloxi, Miss., is paying out $3.5 million; Fort Campbell FCU in Clarksville, Tenn., is paying members a $1.5 million bonus. Hawaii State FCU is paying a $1.5 million bonus.
* OMNI Community CU in Battle Creek, Mich., is paying its first special dividend, of $650,000, to members.
* Goldenwest CU in Ogden, Utah is paying out an 8% dividend.
* Post Office CU, in Madison, Wis., is paying a 4% special dividend, the 14th year in a row its made the holiday payment.
