Mason Lee, 29, allegedly took the money by creating a fake cash drawer assigned to himself, drawing it out of a credit union ATM and swiping it directly from the vault.

Lee was discovered in January during a surprise audit of cash deposits at the branch.

Lee confessed to the theft and told police he had used the cash for rent, food and car loans, saying he had already taken out several payday loans and “had fallen behind on those payments.” Lee told a detective he had intended to pay back the money.

He was charged Wednesday with one count of theft, second-degree felony.
