Caretaker Drains Blind Woman’s CU Account

COLONIE, N.Y. – A Schenectady woman who was supposed to be caring for a disabled and blind woman drained at least $60,000 from the woman’s account at Capital Communications FCU.

Credit union officials called the police last Thursday and told them their member was being robbed. When police arrived, they found the suspect, Cheryl Kirk, 30, and the 50-year-old victim.

Police say Kirk stole the money to feed her cocaine habit.

After befriending and moving in with the victim, the suspect gained access to the woman’s ATM card, check book and PIN number and used it to steal the money beginning in September 2010, according to the charges. The credit union determined something was wrong after several suspicious ATM transactions over the past few months, including an attempt by Kirk to cash an unauthorized check, police said.
