Daniel Trombley, who has been CEO at City of Boston Credit Union since April 2004, will retire on April 28, the CU said Monday.
Daniel Waltz will be Trombley’s successor. The credit union said it conducted a region-wide search before tapping Waltz, who has accepted the position and will step in as president and CEO on May 1. Waltz reportedly brings an extensive career in the financial services industry, having served as president and CEO of Southern Mass Credit Union in Fairhaven, Mass., for the past 15 years.
Prior to becoming head of City of Boston CU, Trombley held leadership roles at community banks throughout Massachusetts for several years. When Trombley took the helm 13 years ago, City of Boston Credit Union had a closed charter for City of Boston employees, $207 million in assets, 16,000 members and two branches. Today, under his leadership, the CU has a community charter established in late 2006, welcoming individuals who live or work in Suffolk or Norfolk County, and has grown to the membership to more than 24,000 members. Present assets stand at $380 million.
The credit union has four full-service branches and a fifth opening in South Boston this spring.
“Dan’s dedication and leadership has been instrumental in guiding City of Boston Credit Union in times of global financial uncertainty, while never forgetting the needs of our members and working hard every day on their behalf,” Steve Green, chairman of the board, said in a statement.
“The board of directors and entire City of Boston Credit Union community wish Dan well in his retirement” Green added.
While at Southern Mass Credit Union Waltz is credited with implementing successful growth strategies, introducing innovative products and services and fostering teamwork with the focus on serving the membership and the community. Prior to Southern Mass CU, Waltz held many leadership positions at The First National Bank of McConnellsburg, Pa.

Throughout his career, Waltz has served on many industry and community boards, currently as chairman of the Southern Mass Chapter of the Cooperative Credit Union Association, Secretary/Treasurer of Fairhaven Dollars for Scholars, Inc., Council Member of the New Bedford Public Schools Education and Industry Coordinating Council and Council Member of the Fairhaven High School Council.
“Dan Waltz has impressed the search committee as well as the executive board, with not only his enthusiasm and knowledge for and of our industry, but his true desire to make the lives of our members better,” said Green. “We look forward to welcoming Dan to the City of Boston Credit Union family.”
A native of Pennsylvania, Waltz earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from Mount Saint Mary’s University.
City of Boston Credit Union is one of the oldest credit unions in the country, established in 1915. Individuals who live or work in Norfolk or Suffolk Counties, as well as City of Boston and Commonwealth of Massachusetts employees are eligible to join.
