Change-of-Address Scam Foiled

At least two credit unions in this small rural town were reporting last week that identity thieves unsuccessfully tried to access their members' accounts through a change-of-address fax scheme.

Carolina Mountains Credit Union said it received a faxed change-of-address request from New York for a Visa account registered to one of its members, but discovered the request was a fraud after speaking to the member. The request listed the name, Social Security number and credit card number of the member in question and asked that the account be send to a Connecticut address.

Separately, Ecusta Credit Union, also based in Pisgah Forest, received a similar fax from a New York address. Both credit unions were notifying the credit bureaus to determine if the accounts had been accessed.
