Check Printer Harland Clarke Retrenches

SAN ANTONIO – Harland Clarke, continuing to cope with the decline in checks, last week said it plans to lay off 53 employees at its check printing facility in Milton, Wash., as part of a consolidation.

Harland Clarke opened the regional facility in Milton in 2001, and will continue operating the facility with 107 employees.

Harland Clarke is a combination of the check printing businesses of Clarke American and John H. Harland Co., which were acquired and are now owned by M&F Worldwide, a conglomerate controlled by Wall Street Financier Ronald O. Perelman.
