MINNEAPOLIS – Dean Nelson, the president and CEO of City-County FCU the past 30 years, announced his retirement yesterday, effective at the end of the month.
Nelson, 68, was appointed CEO of the then $81 million credit union in 1988 when his predecessor, Tom Nord, became sick. The credit union since has grown to more than $500 million in assets, the state’s eighth-largest.
Nelson had a broad impact on Minnesota credit unions, helping to build CU Mortgage Services, now CU Companies, into one of the nation’s largest CUSOs, and was an early champion of shared branching. He was instrumental in bringing about the merger of the Minnesota CU Association and the Minnesota League of CUs to form the Minnesota CU Network. He was one of the first members of MnCUN’s board of directors.
