SAN ANTONIO, Texas - (08/16/04) -- Vowing to return again in the nextelections, four-term Rep. Ciro Rodriguez abandoned his primarychallenge last week after the state's supreme court refused to hearhis appeal. Rodriguez, elected with heavy credit union support in1996, won the March Democratic primary by 148 votes, but lost on arecount by a mere 52 votes to Henry Cuellar. Rodriguez, one of theleaders of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus, claimed the recountwas tainted by fraud and other irregularities. The Democraticcandidate is almost assured of winning the election in this heavilyHispanic congressional district surrounding San Antonio.
