GREENSBORO, N.C. – Police have arrested 22 people in recent weeks and charged them with operating a sophisticated check ring that stole as much as $170,000.

Among those charged was a 28-year-old member of State Employees CU, who allegedly deposited several counterfeit checks into his account in January, then withdrew the funds before the credit union realized the checks were bogus.
The member, identified as Artenas Stevenson, Jr., also is accused of using fake checks to siphon almost $9,000 over two days from credit union ATMs.
