Court Orders CU To Pay Member $200,000

WALLINGFORD, Conn. – A state court judge has ordered Wallingford Municipal Federal Credit Union to pay a member more than $200,000 for a taking the member’s Social Security disability check.

The CU had taken the $13,800 check of Naomi Odell to settle an old debt. However, the judge ruled the action amounted to a theft and awarded the woman more than $200,000 in damages.

Lawyers for Odell argued that the credit union knew the check was for disability funds and that no one other than Odell was supposed to touch them. The credit union took the funds to cover a loan Odell’s husband defaulted on. Odell had co-signed for the loan.
