PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – The Thanksgiving holiday was made a bit better for many of the poor and the hungry by credit unions around the country.
Employees of Service Credit Union traveled around the region this week making stops at three different food pantries and soup kitchens, where they dropped off hundreds of ready-to-cook turkeys for of Thanksgiving. Service CU employees’ first stop was the Rochester, N.H., Salvation Army Worship and Service Center, where they provided 60 turkeys. The credit union said it added the turkeys this year to its annual food drive for the New Hampshire Food Bank in Manchester. The credit union earlier had agreed that for every 10 items donated to the food bank it would donate one turkey.
In San Antonio, Security Service Federal Credit Union collected frozen turkeys during the annual Turkey Round-Up, ultimately presenting 200 Thanksgiving turkeys for the San Antonio Food Bank to distribute to families in need. The credit union continues to collect canned goods and financial donations for the Food Bank through November, working towards its goal of a million pounds of food.
In Lewiston, Idaho, Potlatch #1 FCU donated 500 turkeys to the Idaho Food Bank. The 500 turkeys helped the food bank fill its warehouse and reach its goal of giving out 2,500 turkeys this holiday season.
