The Daily Item in Lynn, Mass. provided coverage of Brotherhood CU’s partnership with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless to help 29 local households pay for heating costs during February. BCU has offered to pay a portion of the heating costs incurred by these families, “some of whom are a paycheck away from becoming homeless,” the newspaper said. BCU President James Sherman was quoted as saying, “At Brotherhood Credit Union, we know that many of our neighbors are struggling to stay warm during the winter.”
The New York Daily News reported two separate stories on Actors Federal Credit Union. The first provided coverage of how all the unknown actors and theater hands in New York obtain mortgage financing–through their credit union, Actors FCU. The story noted that mortgage lender Paul Cole was himself an actor, with Cole saying, “Every week, we get calls from people who are turned away from lending institutions that have the perception they are not ‘approvable’ borrowers, that their income and employment aren’t stable.” The report added, “It’s his job to figure out whether those lenders are wrong.” The story provided additional coverage of the credit union’s $35-million mortgage portfolio, and noted a number of well-known actors are also members. The second story highlighted one of those famous members, 1998 Mis America Kate Shindle, who get a mortgage for an East Harlem co-op thorough the credit union.
