The Missoulian shared the story of the modest roots of Whitefish, Mont.-based Whitefish CU and how five railroad workers during the Great Depression pooled $25 to get WCU founded.
The story quoted CEO Charles Abell on how the CU is now approaching $1 billion in assets. “What (the credit union has) done, since the beginning, is enable people of modest means to borrow money and to make deposits with a reasonable return,” Abell told the Missoulian. “Members put money in, and we loan it out to other members.”
The Chattanooga Times Free Press highlighted how the world and Southern Credit Union have changed over the past 75 years, as the credit union marks that anniversary.
A story noted how it was founded dring the Great Depression when bread was seven cents a loaf and 50 people helped get the credit union started. John Harper, manager of the $19-million CU, was quoted in the story.
