The Christian Science Monitor featured Jenny Gueverra, an employee of Valley CU, San Jose, Calif., in a story on children in the workplace. The story noted that Guevarra, for instance, keeps her baby daughter in a playpen next to her cubicle, and quoted her saying she had concerns about placing her child in daycare. Valley CU has had 54 such babies in its program over the past 10 years.
"For us, it has defined our culture and allowed us to find some great ways to help our staff balance life and work for their benefit as well as ours," Debbie Sallen, VP-HR, told the newspaper.
The Sun provided coverage of how the failure of IndyMac Bank and other bank-related troubles has led to a deposit inflow at some credit unions. "What we've seen more than anything else right now is people who are nervous and moving their money," the newspaper quoted Larry Sharp, CEO of San Bernardino- based Arrowhead CU, as saying.
The Albany Times-Union provided coverage of a visit by Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) with a group of Capital Region credit union executives who were in Washington for NAFCU's Congressional Caucus. The story noted Clinton discussed the "mortgage crisis" in New York. You can bet the mood isn't exactly festive at such a shindig these days. From Clinton's release: "With hundreds of thousands of American families struggling to keep their homes and major Wall Street institutions fighting to stay afloat in this mortgage crisis, New York credit unions are uniquely positioned to help homeowners and provide some much needed stability in the market," the Times-Union quoted Clinton as saying. It included a photo of Clinton meeting with the group.
