WASHINGTON - Suncoast Schools FCU’s Tom Dorety was elected chairman of the CUNA Board last week, as part of the panel’s annual GAC meeting.
The CEO of the $6-billion Tampa, Fla., credit union, succeeds outgoing chairman Allan Kemp McMorris, CEO of Oakland County CU, Waterford, Mich.
The CUNA Board also elected: Kris Kris Mecham, president of Deseret First Credit Union, Salt Lake City, as its vice chairman; Harriet May, president of GECU, El Paso, Texas as its secretary; Mike Mercer, president of the Georgia Credit Union League, as its treasurer; and Patricia Wesenberg, president of Point Plus Credit Union, Stevens Point, Wis., as executive committee member at-large.
Prior to the board meeting, May, who served as treasurer the past two years, reported to CUNA’s Annual General Meeting that CUNA earned $500,000 in net income last year, down from $2.9 million in 2006.
The main reason was $2.5 million in losses on its ownership share of CUNA Strategic Services and $1.1 million in costs for the Little Guy lobbying and public relations campaign, she said. CUNA has budgeted another $1.2 million for the Little Guy this year, the second of the planned two-year campaign (see related story, page 14).
As many as 3,500 credit union and executives attended the Annual General Meeting, which was held in conjunction with CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference.
