WASHINGTON – CUNA reported yesterday its political action committee raised $227,000 in December and spent just $75,000, building its cash on hand to more than $1 million, one of its largest sums ever.
The bulge in the campaign war chest comes at the start of the important second year of the two-year election cycle when both parties will be fighting for control of Congress.
The biggest contributions last month went to: Ted Deutch, a Democratic Florida state senator running for the House ($10,000); Dan Burton, a Republican House member from Indiana ($5,000); Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina ($5,000); Gregory Meeks, a New York Democrat ($5,000); Barbara Boxer, a Democrat senator from California ($4,000) and Thaddeus McCotter, a Republican House member from Michigan ($4,000).
CUNA’s PAC, known as the CU Legislative Action Council, or CULAC, is one of the most active on Capitol Hill. It is expected to be involved in as many as 450 of the 469 races (435 in the House and 34 in the Senate) this year.
CULAC raised almost $1.9 million and spent almost $1.3 million in 2009.
