CUNA, World Council announce theme for International CU Day 2017

The World Council of Credit Unions and Credit Union National Associaiton have announced the theme for the 2017 version of International Credit Union Day: “Dreams Thrive Here.”

According to the Madison, Wis.-based WOCCU, the theme “celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement.”

ICU Day is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October and will take place this year on Oct. 19.

“ICU Day is the opportunity to encourage credit union members to get engaged, share their experiences and celebrate how credit unions and financial cooperatives have made an impact on their life choices. By placing people before profit, we defend the credit union and cooperative financial institution model worldwide,” Brian Branch, World Council president and CEO, said in a statement.

WOCCU said this year’s ICU Day theme illustrates how credit union and other financial cooperatives serve as catalysts to make different professions, personal choices and career paths real. A hand-illustrated poster was designed by a Madison, Wis., artist who belongs to a design and printmaking cooperative.

Jeremiah Tucker, CUNA consumer engagement program lead, noted that this year's theme reflects one of the major themes that resonates with consumers when they think of CUs.

“Credit unions are good at showing how we’re the socially responsible choice for banking, but we also need to remind consumers that credit unions are their best choice for personal success and satisfaction," said Tucker.

Through ICU Day festivities worldwide, credit unions raise awareness through outreach, volunteering in the community and organizing contests, charitable fundraisers, and open houses — ultimately contributing to World Council's Vision 2020 goal of adding 50 million new members by the year 2020.

Official ICU Day graphics and posters in English and Spanish are available for download at International Credit Union Day. Promotional materials and other tips to create unique, memorable member experiences to help celebrate ICU Day will soon be available, WOCCU said. Credit union and financial cooperative representatives and members everywhere are encouraged to share photos, events, experiences and other festivity ideas on Facebook and Twitter using #ICUDay.
