ATLANTA -Credit unions and community banks are ahead of the curve in utilizing social media to connect with consumers a new report from the William Mills Agency stated as it sifted through over 1,000 "tweets" on Twitter posted by more than 60 different financial institutions. The study's author noted that usage varied greatly among FIs and broke the types of Twitter accounts into six categories: problem solvers, community activists, informers, communicators, social butterflies and placeholders based on how the accounts were primarily used.
Not surprisingly, Bank of America's help desk Twitter account logged the most number of posts in the 30-day survey period, but fully half of the most active accounts were held by credit unions, including Group Health CU which tallied more than 170 posts in that time period. Links to websites were by far the most popular form of "tweet," comprising nearly a quarter of all posts.
