CUs Helping The Needy During Holidays

PARMA, Ohio – Thanks to Unity Catholic FCU, a needy family will have plenty of food and gifts this holiday season.

For the last two weeks, UCFCU employees have been shopping, picking up five bags of food pantry items, gifts cards, and gifts for a local family of four.

“Our focus is to provide items that the family can use during the holidays and throughout the year to help them in their time of need,” said Tamlyn Straight-Schervish, UCFCU CEO, who explained staff used their own money and the CU contributed as well.

UCFCU partnered with the Parma Area Family to Family Collaborative (PAFFC), which screens families to verify there is a need for assistance.

Other credit unions also helping the less fortunate during the holidays:
* American Airlines FCU in Fort Worth, Texas, presented the North Texas Food Bank with a $3,090 donation as a result of a week-long “virtual canned food drive.” During early December, AAFCU employees who participated in a special Dress Down Days fund-raiser contributed $5 a day or $20 for the entire week in exchange for being able to wear jeans and sneakers to work.
* In the Fox Cities area of Wisconsin, the Salvation Army raised $58,000 in a day thanks to a matching donation from Capital Credit Union here. CCU matched every donation dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000. In addition, more than 40 credit union employees rang bells Dec. 17 during the match day fund drive.
