NEW YORK-Brian Branch, CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions, and Bill Cheney, CEO of CUNA joined with Ramone Imperial, president of the Caja Popular Mexicana during a United Nations roundtable discussion here organized as part of the 2012 International Year of Cooperatives.
The roundtable session discussed the impact of cooperatives in development, with a special focus on food security, financial and economic stability, and environmental sustainability. The session highlighted the uniqueness and resilience of the cooperative enterprise model as driving their role in these areas.
The theme for the international year is "Cooperative enterprises build a better world." Later in the day, U.N. General Assembly President Nassir Adbdulaziz Al-Nasser launched the International Year of Co-ops in a speech delivered on the floor of the General Assembly.
