CUs Spared From Arizona Fire

PHOENIX – As a large wildfire rages in eastern Arizona near the New Mexico state line, no credit unions have been reported as destroyed or evacuated at press time.

Pat Bodnar, SVP for the Arizona Credit Union League, told Credit Union Journal the fire mostly has burned in rural areas. The three towns most directly threatened by the flames, Eagar, Springerville and Alpine, do not have credit unions.

“But there are some credit unions in St. Johns,” she said, referring to a town that lies north of the fire. “We are watching it closely to see if there is anything we can do. There are a lot of evacuations because the winds are so high. It is just devastating because that area is so beautiful. It was bad when it was 197,000 acres, and now it is even bigger. It is the second-biggest fire ever in Arizona.”
