DALLAS – A surprised – and somewhat skeptical – retiree received a very special delivery to start the new year: an oversized check for $25,000 delivered right to his door by leaders of Neighborhood CU.
The winner, Esau Flores, expressed disbelief as he opened the door to the surprise visitors.
"Is this legal tender?" Flores quipped, when he saw the 2-foot by 3-foot laminated check. Neighborhood CU actually deposited $25,000 into his Prize Savings Account.
A retired employee of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Flores has been a member of the credit union since 1992 and primarily banks at the credit union’s Duncanville branch. The credit union drew the name of the 72-year-old from among all of its Prize Savings Account holders.
Neighborhood CU’s Prize Savings Account is a program designed to promote good savings habits, offering prize drawings throughout the year, culminating with the $25,000 grand prize.
Neighborhood CU members receive one drawing entry for every $25 monthly average balance in their Prize Savings Accounts. The greater the savings, the greater chance a member has of winning. Each month drawings are held for prizes, including $1,000 cash awards. Each quarter, the credit union also awards a plasma TV and $1,000 in cash. At the end of each year, a $25,000 grand prize winner is drawn based on the amount in savings at the close of business Dec. 31.
