Data Breach At Guarantor Of Student Loans

ST. PAUL, Minn. – As much as 5% of all federal student-borrowers may be affected by an identity data breach at Educational Credit Management Corp. here, from which it is believed data on 3.3 million people with student loans may have been stolen.

The data includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers and other information. The company is a nonprofit guarantor of federal student loans and said the stolen information was on a portable media device.

ECMC said the data was not obtained by hackers.
