ORANGEBURG, S.C. A DNA match led investigators to a man they say robbed a S.C. State CU branch back in 2007 by threatening to use a bomb.
Authorities say a periodic DNA check received a match in a national database, leading investigators to Derke Mazo, 47. Mazo already was in the state prison system for a 2008 robbery at a local bank.
After the October 2007 credit union robbery, police detonated a white cloth bag said to have been dropped by a man who threatened employees at the credit union with an explosive device. The robber told credit union employees the package contained explosives and demanded money, according to police records.
Police and K-9 teams tried to track the robber on a nearby street where they found the white bag. Clothing believed to belong to the suspect was recovered about 200 yards from the credit union.
