RANDOLPH, Mass. - An alert 80-year-old member of HarborOne CU helped foil an attempt by one or more identity thieves to tap into the elderly woman’s credit union account.
CU officials notified the member, Irene Romano, that someone had made phone requests to transfer funds from her account to a West Virginia destination. However, because the call came in over a line dedicated to the hearing impaired it did not show caller ID. So the CU alerted local police and they visited the elderly widow. Meantime, Romano had already received a suspicious call purporting to be from her insurance company and after alerting her insurer, realized it was a scam, so she called police.
