ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Red-faced officials at Fairwinds CU apologized to two members who were mistakenly fingered as identity thieves by video surveillance tape at one of its ATMs.
Based on the tape, Altamonte Springs Police released images of people who were thought to be using the stolen debit card of a member who died shortly after the theft. However, the time frame was off, leading the credit union and police to release to the local news media photos of the wrong people, not the alleged suspects.
Police thought the initial images showed people suspected in the theft of Robert Rosinski’s wallet from his hospital bedside. The 54-year-old credit union member died shortly after the theft.
His stolen debit card subsequently was used to withdraw $1,700 in cash from two ATMs.
