The deal, which was agreed to in April, is scheduled to close at the end of the month. The timing of the merger also coincides with the retirement of Sun Center's chief executive, Brenda Hammond, who plans to step down this month.

"We are very excited to expand our service area to Lorain County and to welcome the Sun Center FCU members and staff," said Ben Laurendeau, president and chief executive at Firefighters Community, in a press release Thursday.

A full data conversion will take place on March 23. After that, Sun Center members will have access to a range of mobile banking products, including bill pay and remote deposit capture.

As Firefighters is privately insured through American Share Insurance, Dublin, Ohio, part of the process also involved Sun Center converting from federal deposit insurance through the National CU Share Insurance Fund to private insurance.

Firefighters Community has approximately 27,000 members and  $197 million in assets, according to its most recent annual report. Sun Center has assets of $32 million and 4,000 members, according to NCUA.
