NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Officials at South Carolina FCU are so enamored of Bank Transfer Day they want to ensure that “Every Day is Bank Transfer Day,” or at least that they hold legal title to the term.
Fresh off of adding hundreds of new members in the lead-up to November 5, the $1.3 billion credit union wants to legal authorization to use the term “Every Day is Bank Transfer Day,” and has petitioned the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark on the phrase.
South Carolina Federal has been using the term since the run-up to Bank Transfer Day as excitement heightened, according to Jessica Jackson, spokesman for the credit union. “We just thought it would be a nice way to continue the momentum,” she told the Credit Union Journal yesterday of the trademark application.
South Carolina Federal has been using the phrase “Every Day is Bank Transfer Day” as a banner on its web page touting the conversion of bank accounts. On the page is a video of its chief operating officer explaining to consumers the difference between credit unions and banks and the benefits of switching.
The credit union is also trying to obtain rights to the “hash tag” btd.now, which would be used on Twitter, said Jackson.
She said if they obtain a trademark on the phrase they plan to share it with other credit unions in their ongoing efforts to win over bank customers.
