Georgia CU CEO Killed In New Jersey Police Shooting

NEWARK, N.J. – The president of Credit Union of Atlanta was shot and killed Saturday by an undercover sheriff's detective in Newark's Branch Brook Park.

It was not clear what led to the incident in which 48-year-old Defarra Gaymon, a former New Jersey resident visiting the city, was shot once in the chest.

Gaymon's pickup truck was found parked near the scene of the shooting and has been impounded, but he was not in the vehicle when the shooting occurred. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.

Gaymon served a CEO of the $56 million credit union, formerly Atlanta City Employees CU, for four years.

The prosecutor's office and the sheriff's office will investigate the incident, which was the third law-enforcement related shooting in Newark this week and the fifth in the past month.
