Lawmakers will get a present from the credit union lobby just after they start the 109th Congress-a massive petition that will have millions of names on it asking Congress to retain the credit union tax exemption.
The drive is the latest credit union response to the bankers' "Operation Credit Union," a national campaign aimed at reining in the tax exemption, according to Mark Lowe, spokesman for the California CU League, which has collected almost 130,000 signatures on its anti-tax petition.
As many as 40 state credit union leagues are undertaking the petition drive, according to CUNA. The plan is to present the petitions to each state's congressional representatives when the credit union faithful gather in Washington for their annual lobbying pilgrimage during CUNA's government affairs conference next month.
