BALTIMORE – Check printer Harland Clarke Corp. announced it plans to shut two check printing plants in nearby Glenn Burnie and in Charlotte, N.C., laying of as many as 250 employees.

The company said the closures are not related to the economic downturn but at rationalizing the separate check printing operations of John H. Harland Co. and Clarke American, the two check printers it bought in 2005 and 2007.
Harland Clarke is a subsidiary of M&F Worldwide, a publicly traded holding company controlled by one-time corporate raider Ronald O. Perelman.
