ST. JOSEPH, Mich — United Federal Credit Union wants to ensure their employees' work schedule is balanced with home life.
So in December 2013, more than 500 employees at the $1.79 billion credit union were able to access concierge services, provided by Best Upon Request (BEST) in Cincinnati.
UFCU decided to provide this new benefit to show employees how much the organization values them. The concierge services reduces stress by helping staff balance the demands of their personal and professional lives, say United executives.
BEST's on-site office at UFCU's corporate headquarters offers errand-running services, in addition to traditional services such as event planning and information research. The services are available to all UFCU employees and BEST is now working with vendors near locations in six states to offer additional services like dry cleaning and oil changes.
"United Federal Credit Union's CEO Gary Easterling, was looking for a unique way to thank our employees for their dedicated efforts and success during our recent period of rapid growth," said Cindy Swigert, UFCU's CHRO. "At the same time, as chief human resources officer, I was focused on our human capital strategy. I had been researching and seeking ways to differentiate our credit union as an employer to help us attract and retain talent for our growing organization. The one thing we can't create is more time in each day, yet BEST's concierge program frees up valuable time for our employees."
By the end of September, 47% of UFCU employees enrolled in the service and 38% have made at least one request. Of those who have used the service and submitted feedback: 100% agree BEST helps them feel valued by their employer; 97% agree the concierge services enable them to be more productive at work; and 100% agree the concierge services helps reduce their stress levels.
"Gary and Cindy realized how an employee concierge program would save their team time, decrease stress and, as a result, see increased engagement and commitment, and continue to provide value to their members, said Jessica Lima Bollin, director of marketing and communications at BEST. "They had experienced significant growth and wanted to give their employees a benefit that would 'wow' them, especially after receiving the NAFCU Federal Credit Union of the Year 2013 award."
United Federal Credit Union has a dedicated page on its SharePoint intranet about the service, with easy access to sign up and for email requests.
"Rather than spending personal time searching the Internet or running errands, those chores are taken care of by BEST's concierge service, allowing employees to spend more time with their family and friends," noted Swigert. "What employer-provided benefit could bring greater value than that?"
