Hill-Hikers Get Reminder To Offer Reminder

WASHINGTON-Before thousands of GAC attendees Hiked the Hill last week, they were reminded that many members of Congress still need to understand the CU difference.

Richard Gose, CUNA SVP-political affairs, made that point during a legislative and political update at the GAC, citing that for a message to resonate and remain with someone it needs to be shared several times, and that Congress has a lot of new members right now.

"Not all members of Congress fully appreciate what credit unions do for their members, so we need to continue to educate about the credit union advantage, about the products you offer, and the special things you do to serve your members. Don't assume they know this."

Gose emphasized that credit union members are the movement's greatest advocates, and urged those in attendance to leverage the strong bonds they form with members. "We have the greatest grassroots organization of anyone in the financial services industry."

That following may be even more important this year, with CUNA assessing the threat to CU taxation greater now than in recent memory. Patricia Sowick, CUNA SVP-league and state affairs, said, "We have not been in a situation before where we have seen such a level of threat from bankers-over 20 states show some level of concern."
