How Credit Unions Are Helping

Credit unions and CU organizations around the country are helping raise money for Hurricane Katrina's victims. Here's a look at some of them:

The Credit Union Executives Society has donated $100,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation's National Disaster Fund...Tampa Bay FCU is taking donations from members and non-members at all seven branches...Numerica Credit Union in Spokane is donating $1,000 to the NCUF...Redwood CU in the San Francisco area is accepting cash, transfers or checks made to the Red Cross...First American CU is raising money in Wisconsin and Illinois...Co-op Services CU formed a fund in Missouri and will take donations until the end of 2005...North Jersey FCU joined with the New Jersey CU League to raise money ...Firstmark CU in San Antonio is accepting donations...The Illinois League kicked off hurricane relief with a $5,000 matching gift, part of an $11,000 initial donation to NCUF...Cabrillo CU in San Diego is waiving loan payments, freezing loan interest accruals and waiving fees and charges for members affected by Katrina...Sunmark FCU in Schenectady is taking donations until Sept. 30...Arizona FCU donated $10,000 to the NCUF and will match $50,000 of member and employee donations plus computer and employee donations...Twenty-nine Pennsylvania CU Association employees donated an hour's pay to relief, totaling more than $1,600; PCUA will match the donation in addition to the $3,000 already donated...The California CU League will match $25,000 of donated funds from California Center CU, CU Direct Corp., The CO-OP Network, Financial Service Centers Cooperative and Western Corporate FCU...The CO-OP Network has donated $50,000 to NCUF ...Day Air Credit Union is accepting funds and will be sending them to the American Red Cross and the Ohio Credit Union Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund...Alabama Telco CU is collecting relief donations at all 14 branches...1st Advantage FCU is matching donations up to $1,000 until $50,000 in donations is reached...Security Service FCU in San Antonio is accepting payments from the public at all 29 branches for the Red Cross...Towpath CU in Akron, Ohio is taking monetary donations at its three branches...The Oklahoma Credit Union Foundation set a $50,000 statewide goal for the NCUF and surpassed it with $89,500 donated by Sept. 6...Gulf Winds FCU in Pensacola is filling semi-trailer trucks with nonperishable food, mosquito repellent, baby formula, baby food, diapers, antibacterial wipes and liquid, paper products, cleaning supplies and cash donations for the Red Cross...Aerospace Community CU in St. Louis has added another page to its website to aid hurricane relief and will match member donations up to $7,500...JSC FCU bought pillows, blankets and sleeping bags for 300 evacuees housed in the Houston Bay area and 200 evacuees in Galveston...Wright-Patt Credit Union, Inc. hosted a cookout with a relief donation of $5 per lunch...Hershey FCU is matching donations until Sept. 30 and will raise funds at its annual golf tourney...Tuscarawas Schools CU in Dover, Ohio is selling candy bars and popcorn and placed a change collection jar on a countertop for donations...Altura Credit Union has donated $50,000 to NCUF, and added change collection buckets at all branches and is planning a blood drive...Point West CU created a relief fund and will match the first $1,000 donated by members for the first three weeks of September. Point West also gave $1,000 to the NCUF national disaster relief fund...DuPont Goodrich FCU is collecting supplies for evacuees coming to Southeast Texas, offering check cashing and other services to non members...Border FCU has placed canisters at all locations asking members to contribute money and is giving supplies to Air Force pilots for disaster areas...Texans CU, Texas Health Resources CU and Brownbuilder FCU are cashing checks and offering money order, wire service and travelers check service to evacuees...Members Choice CU is accepting donations, waiving fees to process extensions for loan payments, providing emergency loans at 0% interest with no payment for 60 days for members and employees are answering phones at a local chamber of commerce...Neighborhood CU is cashing postal payroll checks for non-member postal employees and waiving check-cashing fees plus assisting ASI CU and its members...DuPont SRW Employees FCU delivered two car loads of supplies and $2,220 to the local Red Cross and also have employees donating their time at shelters...1st University Cares, the philanthropic arm of 1st University CU has donated $1,000.00 to churches hosting evacuees. The CU matched the donation, contributing another $1,000...The Tyler Chapter of the Texas league is holding a dinner fundraiser to raise cash...Desert Schools FCU donated $25,000 to the Red Cross and also $1,000 to the Arizona CU Foundation. Desert Schools members raised $47,000 in only three days including $1,700 in coins...Redstone FCU is accepting donations at its branches, as is American Heritage FCU...Langley FCU is accepting donations...The Wisconsin CU League has added a web page at www.theleague.coop to accept donations, report fund-raising ideas and identify recipients for donations. The league donated $3,000 for the fund.
