The off premises theft of the laptop took place before Nov. 4, according to a letter the credit union sent to members. Information on the stolen laptop included names, addresses and account numbers of what CEFCU said was a “small percentage” of its members.

CEFCU said it immediately reported the laptop theft to law enforcement authorities and notified federal and state regulatory authorities that monitor the credit union.

The credit union said it would closely monitor the affected members’ accounts, but “strongly” advised them to take advantage of the credit report monitoring and identity protection service it offers them.

The service, Experian’s Protect MYID Alert, can be contacted by calling 1-877-288-8057 toll-free or going to its website at www.protectmyid.com/cefcu. The members which CEFCU contacted by letter were given a personal activation code to use on the website.
