In Calif/Nev., Concerns Over Redistricting

SAN DIEGO-California's CUs were urged to pay more attention to political redistricting by Diana Dykstra, president and CEO of the California and Nevada CULeagues, who called the issue "a big deal."

In some cases, she noted, the new district lines mean longtime CU champions will be facing off against other CU supporters, forcing hard choices.

Meanwhile, Dykstra said the league is not concerned in the short term about losing the CU tax exemption, but is concerned the lack of any agreement by the congressional super-committee may lead to a new threat. The nightmare scenario, she said, is that in the final days leadingup to a federal budget gap, lawmakers consider imposing a tax on credit unions.

Meanwhile, Dykstra said the newly approved dues schedule includes a self-funded public advocacy program. Dykstra said this was part of a plan to reduce league dues. The internal funding for public advocacy will come from several outside revenue sources and cost controls.
