Hillary Shaffer, the senior account reconciliation specialist at the insurance company, told authorities she used her co-worker's password to fool Great-West's internal security measures and steal the money. The scheme allegedly occurred between September 2001 and August 2005.

Shaffer’s ex-boyfriend, David Hillman, has also been charged in the scheme. The two used the money for living expenses and to pay for "expensive purchases" by Hillman, "including cars and other collectibles," according to a grand jury indictment.
