BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Approximately 48 million uninsured Americans have until early 2014 to sign up for health insurance coverage under Obamacare, and one CU expects that the attention on healthcare will attract new business and tie the cooperative more closely to the community.
Legacy Community FCU plans to roll out a private health insurance exchange to its members by the end of the month. The $402 million CU will offer EPL’s Credit Union Exchange Blueprint, according to SVP Glenn Bryan. He says the offering is timely with all the recent news focus on public health insurance exchanges and consumers’ need for information to make informed healthcare choices.
“The way people look at health insurance is starting to change,” said Bryan. “From our perspective, we have to be prepared to respond to what our membership finds important. A number of our members will obviously be seeking health insurance coverage to meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.”
Though the CU will be providing a private exchange option, staff have been trained to answer questions about other health insurance plans, including public exchanges, according to Bryan. “We are further positioning the credit union as a trusted advisor,” he added.
