Loan Officer Guilty In $77,000 Embezzlement

MISSOULA, Mont. – A former loan officer for Helena Community CU pleaded guilty yesterday to taking out $77,000 in phony loans from the credit union.

Ben Diveley, 34, took out the loans by making up borrower names and guaranteeing the loans with members’ CDs, without the members’ permission.

The one-time loan officer said he used the money to pay off bills he ran up through overspending, including nearly $32,000 to Bank of America.

Diveley pleaded guilty to charges of credit union embezzlement, money laundering and identity theft and is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24.
