Williams became CEO of the credit union, then known as Norfolk & Western CU, in 1972, when it had just 1,500 employees and $2.8 million in assets. He will leave it with more than 52,000 members served at 15 branches and $355 million in assets and a strong balance sheet–$4 million in net income for 2007.

Among the milestones achieved during Williams’ 36-year tenure are: the introduction of checking in 1978 (the first Virginia credit union to offer checking); the launch of Internet banking; the unveiling of commercial loans; and the creation of three student-run branches in local high schools.
