MISSOULA, Mont. – Members of Montana First CU voted down a proposed merger of their $63-million credit union into Washington’s Horizon CU, a rare member rejection of a merger proposal.
Members apparently balked at the idea of their locally controlled credit union being acquired by the much larger Washington credit union, $430-million Horizon, based in Spokane Valley. Horizon has branches in Washington and Idaho and is seeking a foothold in Montana.
The defeat comes after a campaign waged by Montana First members, who reportedly did not want to see the elimination of their credit union.
