KINSTON, N.C. -- Self Help CU’s recycled branch here—a former gas station- is green in more ways than one.

The energy efficient building is punctuated with an entire teller counter made up of shredded greenbacks set in a resin base. The counter top looks greenish and people can see the shreds and tiny portions of the various elements of the currency.

The rehabilitated building was gutted and renovated after being used as a fire station, oil change shop and audio equipment store. The building was enlarged from 1,200 square feet to more than 2,300 square feet of space. The old open-ended auto bays are now a drive-up window and ATM area.

Besides recycling an old building, Self Help incorporated other green elements, such as using LED lights inside and out and carpeting partially made with recycled materials.

The building was enlarged from 1,200 square feet to more than 2,300 square feet of space.
