More Than 1 Million Receive Foreclosure Counseling

WASHINGTON – In a bittersweet achievement, the number of homeowners in the U.S. who have received counseling to avoid foreclosure has now surpassed 1 million.

A new report from the Urban Institute on the impact of the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program (NFMC), which was created by Congress to address the nationwide foreclosure crisis by dramatically increasing the availability of free counseling for families at risk of foreclosure, said 1.12 million homeowners have now received foreclosure prevention counseling. Congress named NeighborWorks America as administrator of the program in 2008.
