National CU Foundation Names 2005 Herb Wegner Honorees

The National Credit Union Foundation has named the recipients of its 2005 Herb Wegner Awards.

Recognized for their work were:

* James Likens, president and dean of Western CUNA Management School, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his many achievements. "He is a strong voice for credit unions in his role as teacher, lobbyist, writer, consultant and expert witness in significant credit union court cases," the NCUF said.

* Cliff Rosenthal, executive director of the National Federation of CDCUs, who will receive the Individual Achievement Award for his efforts to elevate the cooperative principles of financial empowerment both for individuals and communities. "Under his leadership, the federation has developed a highly successful Capitalization Program, established the CDCU Institute and Community Development Partners program," the NCUF said.

* Burlington-based Vermont Development CU will receive the Outstanding Organization Award for its unique efforts to meet the challenges of developing the financial health of less-advantaged individuals through innovative products and services. The $34-million credit union has plans to become the nation's first full-service, statewide, community development financial institution. Their signature counseling-based lending philosophy is captured in the slogan, "We don't say no, we say when."

Dennis Dollar, former chairman of the NCUA, who has been named recipient of the Anchor Award, created in 1998 and given to honor individuals and organizations making contributions to the growth of credit unions and the promotion of affordable financial services to consumers.

The awards will be presented at the Herb Wegner Dinner in Washington in conjunction with CUNA's GAC.
