New Cards Breach Probed In Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Federal investigators are tracking a major cards breach in the Louisville area, potentially affecting hundreds of cardholders at a half dozen credit unions and banks in the metro area.

The fraudulent charges to local accounts stretch from coast to coast, coming in from at least 12 states in the last two weeks, including California, Nevada, Louisiana, Florida and the Northeast, according to authorities.

Park FCU posted a warning on its website after it learned of similar data breaches and reports of bogus charges to members. One member said she had more than $600 charged to her account in one day in North Carolina.

People’s Bank of Bullitt County said thousands of dollars were stolen from customers. The bank had to shut down more than 500 accounts in all and refund the money.

Authorities are focusing on a Louisville-based credit card processor that may have been hacked, with debit and credit card information of customers from a number of different local stores stolen.
