ALEXANDRIA, Va. – NCUA said last week it granted charters for two new federal credit unions last month, only the fifth and six new credit unions started in 2008.
That follows just five new charters in 2007, the fewest in almost 100 years.
Last month’s new charters went to REALTORS FCU, the Internet-based credit union for the nation’s 1.3 million realtors that will be run out of the National Association of REALTORS’ Rockville, Md., headquarters; and to Georgia Family FCU in Norcross, Ga.
The other new charters for 2008 are: Mid East Tennessee Community CU, Decatur, Tenn.; NCI Community Development CU, Dallas; Oak Hill Christian CU, Dallas and Destiny CU, Milwaukee.
NCUA also awarded a federal charter to the Community for Self Help, the Durham, N.C., community development group that runs one of the biggest state chartered CDCUs.
