Alabama Credit Union's good deed has not had the best of consequences. After moving quickly to notify members there had been a credit card breach at Sam's Club that invloved approximately 500 members, local media picked up on the notification and implied the breach affected ACU members only, even though other banks were also affected.

Alabama CU followed up with press releases seeking to clarify the matter. In a statement to local media, CEO Steve Swofford said, "We are certain, in the coming days, more card issuers and financial institutions will be contacting their cardholders to take similar action to prevent fraudulent transactions from occurring. We're aware of at least one large financial institution in Alabama that has more than 4,000 cards affected, but they have made no public announcement yet."
