SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A member of New Process Gear CU was charged Friday with taking advantage of offline ATMs to steal $75,539 even though he had only $5 in his account.

Jason Monto, 31, is accused of taking advantage of a glitch that enabled him to repeatedly withdraw money from the credit union’s ATM. Monto allegedly figured out when an ATM machine was not directly linked to the credit union's records during non-business hours so the ATM machine was giving him up to $300 a visit without any verification of whether he had the funds in his account.
Monto had only $5 in an old account and was able to withdraw the $75,539 before the credit union figured out what was happening and linked the missing money to his account number.
